THE WORKSHOP EXPERIENCE

INFORMATION

The Workshop Experience at The She Melbourne gives students a unique look or peak behind the curtain of what it takes to be a furniture designer maker in Melbourne. With 5 days starting from 10am to 3pm you’ll be guided from the very beginning to the end of what it takes to build your very own piece of custom hardwood furniture.

With the direction of designer maker and tutor Ricky Wood owner of Ricky Wood Design and The She Melbourne you’ll learn all the basics and not so basic techniques involved in making your very own piece of furniture that will have pride of place in your home.

Our 5 day furniture making schedule -

  • Day One - Monday will be all about getting your design down on paper. We will sketch your design out on paper before transferring it to our 3D programme so we can see what it looks like in the flesh (well almost). We will then go through the process of working put how much timber and materials will be needed to complete your project. Once we have that all sorted we will then go through a rigorous induction of machinery needed for your project and get you used to being in the space. We want all students to feel comfortable in the workshop.

  • Day Two - Possibly the most exciting day, after meeting at the workshop we will head over to our great friends at Urban Salvage for a quick tour of the timber yard and to pick out the very timber we are going to use for your project. Once picked we head back to the workshop to get started! Hopefully by the end of day two we have some timber in clamps and your project is off and going.

  • Day Three - Is all about breaking your project down into steps. Making a big job into a bunch of little jobs, by the end of day three we will most likely have all of our main components glued up and ready to be cut to size.

  • Day Four - Its time to start putting it all together, we will be cutting everything to size and completing all initial sanding and joinery. By now it’ll look like you’ve made something. Go you!

  • Day Five - This is where we do final sanding and finishing touched on all of our piece and get a coat of hard wax on to allow it to seal up and finish.
