The Shed Melbourne student routing edges of a chopping board completed in the chopping board masterclass

 Chopping Board Masterclass

Perfect for complete beginners, this hands-on workshop walks you through the real basics of woodworking. You’ll learn how to select sustainably sourced local hardwoods, measure and mark accurately, cut to length, laminate, flatten, sand, and finish your very own hardwood chopping board from start to finish.

Guided by our talented tutors, you’ll build skills, confidence, and something genuinely useful — a board ready for everything from lazy charcuterie lunches to after-dinner cheese spreads.

Walk away with new skills, a beautiful handmade piece, and the ultimate brag line:

“Yeah… I made that.”

The Details

Our Chopping Board Masterclass runs regularly throughout the year, with new dates released once a class is nearly full. Workshops typically run every 2–3 months, so if you see a spot available, we recommend jumping in before it fills up.

Each student will walk away with one finished hardwood chopping board, along with the knowledge and confidence to make your own again in the future. Throughout the day, you’ll learn the complete process — from timber selection and preparation through to laminating, flattening, sanding, and finishing.

You’ll also receive your own tub of The Shed Melbourne Chopping Board Wax to keep your board looking fresh long after the class ends.

Once you’ve completed the workshop, you’ll gain exclusive access to future beginner-level courses at The Shed Melbourne.

Classes generally run for around 6 hours, depending on glue curing times — a little quicker in summer and slightly longer in winter. We recommend allowing an extra half hour during the colder months.
